Florida (FL) Car Insurance Requirements (2026)
The minimum you need
- Bodily injury per person
- Not required
- Bodily injury per accident
- Not required
- Property damage
- $10,000
Florida doesn't require bodily injury liability to register a car. Only PIP and property damage. If you hurt someone with only the minimum, nothing on your policy pays for their injuries.
No-fault state Your own policy pays your medical bills first, no matter who caused the crash.
What else is required
PIP (personal injury protection): Required ($10,000)
Uninsured motorist: Not required
Has to be offered, and you can decline it in writing.
Teen and new driver notes
The Florida minimum is one of the weakest in the country. A new driver carrying only that is one bad accident away from a lawsuit with nothing to cover it. Ask for quotes with bodily injury liability added.
New to all this? Start with the new driver guide.
Penalties for driving uninsured
Driving without the required coverage can mean fines and a suspended license and registration.
Penalty schedules change and vary by county. Confirm current fines with the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles before relying on this for a specific situation.
